Just be yourself when you’re playing Texas Hold’em poker. Don’t bother to emulate some other, smooth player when it doesn’t remain true to who you are. Stay true to your character and you should be more comfortable, which will in turn help you to win more often.
Have a life outside of poker. You shouldn’t obsess over poker 24/7 because then you’ll forget how to live life. Get some exercise, go on a date, play Scrabble or catch up with your buddies as often as possible.
Cultivate your aggression a bit. Forget about constantly calling or checking; bet or raise more often because that’s how your opposition will fold easier. You want them to fold so that your profit can go up.
Become a bit obsessed with poker. Become obsessed with the rules, with the strategies, and with the way you feel when you’re playing it. But no, this doesn’t contradict our number 2; too much of a good thing isn’t good for you. So restrain yourself when all you can think about it poker. A bit of obsession is good and is a prerequisite for genius. But the keywords you should focus on are ‘a bit’.
Are you tired? Do you need some sleep? Then stop playing. Create rules that will keep you from burning out at the table or computer. Many players before you have done this so don’t think you’re being a wimp when you need a break.
Limit your bets to ones that won’t bankrupt you. The richer and more experienced players might exploit you if you’re not careful. So restrain yourself and protect your wallet.
Do not play too low either. You’ll play a boring game that doesn’t challenge you much when you avoid calling.
Do not blow it by getting angry. It isn’t going to help you win the big pot. Stay calm and think about something pleasant like winning the big pot.
Take some notes of your opponents. This will help you to remember things that you’d otherwise forget. Use these things to beat ‘em when they least expect it.
Be honest about your failings. Stop making excuses and start seeing where to improve your game. Cause then you’ll avoid making those same mistakes over and over again.
